Study suggests dementia population will triple in the next 30 years

11th December 2017

Currently in 2017, it is estimated that there are 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, information from the World Health Organization suggests that this will almost triple by the year 2050. The global estimation of the population living with dementia is currently 50 million if this triples then there will be 150 million people that will need emotional and medical care, from residential homes and healthcare such as the NHS.

The NHS currently spends £26.3 billion a year on providing medical care for dementia patients, that’s enough to pay the energy bills of every household in the country, according to an Alzheimer’s Society report by the London school of economics and political science. The charity is urging the government to assess the current financial situation for people living with dementia, as families on average are paying two-thirds of the overall costs for health and social care.

Jeremy Hughes, chief executive of Alzheimer's society states “225,000 people develop dementia in the UK every year - that is one every three minutes,” this figure proves how people living with dementia will only increase during the future years, that’s why it’s crucial to have the proper care and high-quality training in place for caregivers and medical staff.
